Hub Overview

Greater Paris and the Paris-Saclay plateau together form one of France's leading nanoscience regions. The anchor on the Saclay side is C2N, the Centre for Nanoscience and Nanotechnology, one of the largest nanofabrication and research laboratories in France, run by the CNRS and Université Paris-Saclay with a major cleanroom. In the city itself, Sorbonne University, the Paris Institute of Nanosciences, and CNRS and CEA groups add deep fundamental research. Together they cover nanophotonics, nanoelectronics, quantum devices, materials, microsystems, and nano-bio technologies.
The hub is distributed across central Paris and the Saclay plateau to the southwest, including Palaiseau, Orsay, and the surrounding Île-de-France research sites. Paris-Saclay provides the large cleanroom and nanofabrication capacity, drawing together universities, engineering schools, and national labs into one of Europe's denser research campuses, while central Paris adds fundamental nanoscience, physics, chemistry, and materials research. The strengths span photonics, quantum, electronics, and nano-bio across both poles.

The main promising applications are forecast in the fields of optical interconnects in CMOS integrated circuits and optical communications, where silicon can provide low cost solutions. Strong potential also exists in the development of silicon nanostructures for biophotonics. Studies in this field have been performed for many years in this group (MINAPHOT). They mainly work on the design, the fabrication of test devices in our cleanroom and the characterization.
