Hub Overview
Greater Philadelphia pairs two strong fabrication and materials universities a short walk apart in West Philadelphia. The University of Pennsylvania runs the Singh Center for Nanotechnology, whose Quattrone Nanofabrication Facility is the region's main open cleanroom. Drexel University is the birthplace of MXenes, the large family of two-dimensional carbides and nitrides discovered there in 2011, and concentrates that work in its A.J. Drexel Nanomaterials Institute. The University of Delaware to the south adds catalysis, soft matter, and composites, giving the region depth in nanomedicine, electronics, and advanced characterization.
Most activity sits in University City around Penn and Drexel, where the campuses and the Singh Center cluster within a few blocks. From there the corridor runs south to the University of Delaware and west into the suburban life science and pharmaceutical belt. The hub is strongest where materials science, bioengineering, and medicine overlap, which is also where its spinout companies tend to form.
