Hub Overview

Pittsburgh approaches nanotechnology through two complementary universities and a national energy lab. Carnegie Mellon brings strength in devices, sensors, and the computational and robotics culture it is known for, while the University of Pittsburgh runs the Petersen Institute of NanoScience and Engineering and its Nanoscale Fabrication and Characterization Facility, a cleanroom in Benedum Hall open to outside users. The Department of Energy's National Energy Technology Laboratory sits nearby, giving the region a distinctive pull toward energy and structural nanomaterials.
Almost everything centers on the Oakland district, where Carnegie Mellon and the University of Pittsburgh sit side by side. From there the activity links out to the region's advanced manufacturing and energy base, a legacy of Pittsburgh's industrial history now redirected toward materials, additive manufacturing, and sensors. The nanotechnology here leans applied, tied to robotics, biomedical engineering, and the durable materials the local economy has long produced.
