Hub Overview

Rochester is the optics capital of the United States, and its nanotechnology grows out of that strength. The University of Rochester's Institute of Optics awards a large share of the country's optics degrees, and the university operates URnano, an open nanofabrication center serving academic and industry users. Rochester is also home to the Laboratory for Laser Energetics, the largest university based research program funded by the Department of Energy, which runs some of the most powerful lasers in academia. The combination gives the region unusual depth in nanophotonics, optical materials, and imaging.
Activity centers on the University of Rochester and a surrounding base of optics, photonics, and imaging companies, a legacy of the region's long history in lenses, film, and precision instruments. URnano is the practical draw for outside groups needing fabrication, while the laser laboratory anchors high-end optical and materials research. Rochester links into the wider upstate New York microelectronics and photonics corridor, but its optics driven profile is distinct from Ithaca and Albany.

The group's research goal is a complete understanding of the fundamental properties of materials with a size in between individual molecules and the bulk. Currently, their investigations are focused on fundamental studies of carbon nanotubes and semiconductor nanocrystals, and the integration of these materials into both novel non-linear optical devices and biological sensors.
