Seoul concentrates South Korea's university and corporate nanotechnology in and around the capital. Seoul National University, Korea University, and Yonsei anchor the academic side, alongside the Korea Institute of Science and Technology, the country's oldest national research institute. What sets the region apart is its proximity to industry: the research and development operations of Samsung, LG, and SK feed directly into a cluster that is unusually strong in displays, semiconductors, batteries, and the nanomaterials those products depend on.
Seoul is best treated as separate from Daejeon. Seoul provides the largest concentration of universities, corporate laboratories, and medical research in the country, while Daejeon and its Daedeok district provide the national institute cluster. Together they form the backbone of Korea's nano ecosystem. Within Seoul, the strengths track the local industry: display and battery materials, nanoelectronics, sensors, and biomedical nanotechnology tied to the city's large hospital and university base. Korean institutions often list research groups as individual faculty profiles rather than standalone group pages, with much detail on Korean-language pages, so the labs listed here understate the region's true research volume.
