Shanghai pairs heavyweight research with a strong commercialization base, and much of it sits in one place: the Zhangjiang science city in Pudong. Zhangjiang hosts the Shanghai Synchrotron Radiation Facility, one of China's largest scientific user facilities, whose X-ray beamlines are central to nanomaterials and device research. Around it, Fudan University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, and Chinese Academy of Sciences institutes work alongside the city's semiconductor and biomedical industries. The result is a hub that runs from fundamental nanoscience through to applied devices and manufacturing.

Activity is distributed across Zhangjiang, the university campuses, academy institutes, and industrial parks, but Zhangjiang is the gravitational center, combining the synchrotron, research institutes, and a major semiconductor and biomedicine cluster. Shanghai functions as both a research and an application hub, connecting nanoscience to manufacturing, healthcare, electronics, and materials, and serving as a commercialization gateway for the wider Yangtze River Delta. Its strengths run through applied nanomaterials, nano-enabled devices, nanomedicine, and microelectronics. At many Chinese institutions, research groups appear mainly as individual faculty profiles rather than as standalone group pages, and much of the detail sits on Chinese-language pages, so the labs listed here understate the region's true research volume.
