Hub Overview

Sydney is Australia's strongest quantum and nanofabrication center, built around two universities a few kilometres apart. UNSW Sydney is a global leader in silicon-based quantum computing, where spin qubits are fabricated atom by atom toward a practical quantum processor. The University of Sydney runs the Sydney Nanoscience Hub, home to the Australian Institute for Nanoscale Science and Technology, with adjoining cleanrooms from the New South Wales node of the Australian National Fabrication Facility. Together they cover quantum devices, photonics, nanoelectronics, and biomedical nanomaterials.
The two anchors sit close together: UNSW at Kensington and the University of Sydney at Camperdown, both inside the inner city. Their shared ANFF cleanrooms open the same fabrication tools to academic groups, startups, and industry, which makes Sydney a practical base for anyone needing device prototyping rather than only materials synthesis. Macquarie University and UTS add further photonics and sensing groups across the metropolitan area.

The group's research enables nanodevices and integrated systems with ultralow energy consumption, minimising all the parasitic energy (electrical, thermal, mechanical) losses which make devices power-hungry and less performant. Low energy consumption needs to be complemented with efficient energy storage and an appropriate system design. Nanomaterials like graphene and novel 2D materials are key enablers.
