Taiwan's nanotechnology is inseparable from its semiconductor industry, and the center of gravity is the corridor running from Taipei southwest to Hsinchu. Hsinchu Science Park is the heart of it, home to TSMC, the largest contract chipmaker in the world, and to the Industrial Technology Research Institute, the applied research organization that seeded much of Taiwan's electronics sector. Nearby universities, including National Tsing Hua and National Yang Ming Chiao Tung, feed the cluster, making this one of the densest concentrations of nanoelectronics and nanofabrication anywhere.
The corridor links Taipei's universities and the research institutes of Academia Sinica with Hsinchu Science Park, ITRI, TSMC, and the long supply chain of materials, equipment, and packaging firms that surrounds them. It is best understood as a manufacturing-driven hub: the strength is less in broad nanoscience than in nanoelectronics, nanofabrication, and advanced device and packaging technology at the leading edge of the chip industry.
