Hub Overview
Greater Tokyo, taken together with the science city of Tsukuba, is Japan's primary nanotechnology region and one of the largest concentrations of materials research anywhere. Central Tokyo holds the University of Tokyo and the Institute of Science Tokyo, the university formed in 2024 by merging the former Tokyo Institute of Technology with a leading medical university. An hour north, Tsukuba adds two of Japan's most important national institutes: the National Institute for Materials Science and AIST, the national institute for industrial science and technology.
The hub stretches from central Tokyo out through Yokohama and Chiba to Tsukuba Science City to the north. Tsukuba is the research heavyweight, with the materials and industrial institutes and their large shared facilities, while the Tokyo universities and corporate laboratories tie nanoscience to the country's strengths in electronics, advanced materials, robotics, and precision manufacturing. RIKEN's campuses in the wider region add further basic research depth. Japanese institutions often list research groups as individual faculty profiles rather than standalone group pages, with much detail on Japanese-language pages, so the labs listed here understate the region's true research volume.
