Hub Overview
Greater Toronto's nanotechnology centers on the University of Toronto and its Toronto Nanofabrication Centre, an open-access cleanroom in the engineering faculty that serves academic and industrial users alike. The university is known for colloidal quantum dots and solution processed optoelectronics, including light emitting and solar devices, and for a strong nanomedicine line in targeted nanoparticle delivery. Around it a commercial sector has grown in nanomaterials, nanocoatings, and nanobiotechnology, supported by Ontario's wider research and manufacturing base.
Research and company activity concentrate in downtown Toronto around the university, with further links west to Waterloo, southwest to Hamilton at McMaster, and into Mississauga's manufacturing base. The Toronto Nanofabrication Centre is the practical draw for visitors, since it takes outside projects and prototypes rather than serving one group. The region's strengths lie in applied materials, biomedical engineering, coatings, photonics, and device-oriented nanoscience.
