Hub Overview

Vienna concentrates Austria's nanoscience in a compact cluster dominated by its universities. TU Wien anchors the device side through its Center for Micro and Nanostructures, a semiconductor cleanroom that fabricates nanoelectronic, optoelectronic, and sensor structures and supports the university's work in quantum technologies and two-dimensional materials. The University of Vienna contributes a deep quantum optics and surface science tradition, while the Austrian Academy of Sciences institutes and the Austrian Institute of Technology extend the hub into quantum materials, photonics, and applied nanoelectronics.
The cluster is small by international standards but unusually dense, with universities, academy institutes, and technology transfer offices within a short distance of each other inside the city. It also plugs into Austria's wider microelectronics and materials base, including industrial research links toward Lower Austria and the sensor and chip activity around Styria and Carinthia. For a visitor, almost everything of interest is reachable within Vienna itself.
