Hub Overview
The Ann Arbor and Detroit corridor builds its nanotechnology on the University of Michigan and an industrial base in motion. Michigan runs the Lurie Nanofabrication Facility, an open-access cleanroom that is one of the leading centers anywhere for microelectromechanical systems and microsystems, with more than four hundred users from universities, government, and industry. That strength in sensors, actuators, and integrated devices feeds directly into the region's automotive and mobility sector, where nanomaterials and microsystems go into vehicles, batteries, coatings, and sensing.
The academic core sits in Ann Arbor, where the Lurie facility anchors most of the research, while the industrial pull runs east toward Detroit and the automotive supply chain. The Lurie cleanroom is the practical draw for outside groups, since it takes external users on a fee basis and runs around the clock. The region is strongest in nanofabrication, sensors, MEMS, energy and battery materials, coatings, and the nanoscale tools that feed mobility and manufacturing.
