UAlbany NanoCollege opens pioneering nanotechnology baccalaureate program

(Nanowerk News) The College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering ("CNSE") of the University at Albany announced today that it is now accepting applications for admission to its groundbreaking undergraduate program, which represents the nation's first comprehensive baccalaureate curriculum in Nanoscale Science.
The first classes as part of the UAlbany NanoCollege's pioneering Bachelor of Science program are scheduled to begin in the Spring 2010 semester. Students interested in submitting applications - including current undergraduate students in their freshman or sophomore years of study - are welcome to learn more about the program, including admission requirements and application instructions, at cnse.albany.edu/academic_programs.html.
First announced in June by State University of New York ("SUNY") Chancellor Nancy Zimpher following its unanimous approval by the SUNY Board of Trustees and rapid approval by the New York State Education Department, the degree program will offer an academically rigorous preparation for students intending to pursue scientific, technical or professional careers in nanotechnology-enabled fields or graduate studies in nanoscale science, as well as other physical sciences such as materials science, physics and chemistry, and broader fields of engineering.
Academic instruction will take place exclusively within CNSE's Albany NanoTech Complex, an 800,000-square-foot megaplex that is the most advanced in the academic world, with more than 80,000 square feet of state-of-the-art, 300mm wafer cleanrooms and a cadre of leading global corporate partners located on site, including IBM, AMD, GlobalFoundries, International SEMATECH, Tokyo Electron and Applied Materials.
University at Albany President George M. Philip said, "The baccalaureate program in Nanoscale Science at the College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering is truly second to none. It offers a unique opportunity for undergraduate students to receive unparalleled education and training in nanotechnology, which is increasingly the driver for innovations in every field imaginable, and further underscores the University's growing recognition as a world-class institution for scientific research and discovery."
CNSE Senior Vice President and Chief Executive Officer Dr. Alain E. Kaloyeros said, "The UAlbany NanoCollege is delighted to begin accepting applications for the pioneering undergraduate program in Nanoscale Science, through which we will provide unmatched education and hands-on instruction to develop the nation's future leaders in nanoscale science and engineering. This groundbreaking program offers immense opportunities for our undergraduate students, while also building the highly skilled workforce that is critical for New York State to enhance its global leadership in nanotechnology education, innovation, and economic investment and growth."
The CNSE undergraduate curriculum in the interdisciplinary field of nanoscale science is designed to provide UAlbany's undergraduate students with a well-rounded education of the highest quality; one that endows the student's intellect with the analytical tools necessary to explore, discover and innovate while cementing the student's basic proficiency and fundamental knowledge in the science of nanotechnology.
