The ESRF is a multinational research institute, situated in Grenoble, France and financed by 19 countries mostly European. It operates a powerful synchrotron X-ray source with some 30 beamlines (instruments) covering a wide range of scientific research in fields such as biology and medicine, chemistry, earth and environmental sciences, materials and surface science, and physics. The ESRF employs about 600 staff and is organized as a French société civile.
You will participate in ongoing in-house research programmes, the running of the beamline, providing support to external users as local contact, and develop your own research programme.
You will join the effort of the group to upgrade the performance of the experimental end-stations and to develop experimental techniques for measuring the structural evolution as a function of time. The structural changes are normally initiated by short laser pulses and the evolving structure probed by short delayed x-ray pulses. A fast movie can then be assembled by stitching together “snapshots” at different delays. The beamline scientists are currently working on phase transitions in solids including nanoparticles and nanowires and on the structure of molecules in solution.
You should hold a PhD in physics or physical chemistry or closely related science. A strong background in diffraction or scattering techniques is desirable.
