Hub Overview
Helsinki and neighboring Espoo form Finland's nanotechnology cluster, built around Aalto University and the VTT Technical Research Centre. Together they run OtaNano, a national open infrastructure that includes Micronova, the largest cleanroom in the Nordic countries, and a low-temperature laboratory used for quantum and ultra-cold physics. Finland has a particular heritage here: atomic layer deposition, the thin-film technique now essential to modern chipmaking, was developed in the country, and the region remains strong in thin films, superconducting quantum technology, and nanocellulose from its forest industry.
The cluster runs from Helsinki across to the Otaniemi campus in Espoo, where Aalto, VTT, and the OtaNano cleanrooms sit within walking distance of each other. Its standout strength is superconducting quantum technology, with the shared Micronova cleanroom used to fabricate quantum processors and sensors and a new hub under construction to expand that capacity. The University of Helsinki adds materials and thin-film chemistry, and the region runs strong in nanocellulose, photonics, and micro- and nanoelectronics.
