ICN2 PhD Fellowship Programme

Organization Description:

The Institut Català de Nanociència i Nanotecnologia, with its official English translation Catalan Institute of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology and acronym ICN2, is a non-profit international research institute located close to Barcelona, Spain. Its research lines focus on the newly-discovered physical and chemical properties that arise from the behaviour of matter at the nanoscale.

The patrons of the ICN2 are the Government of Catalonia, the Spanish National Research Council and the Autonomous University of Barcelona. The institute promotes collaboration among scientists from diverse backgrounds to develop basic and applied research, while always seeking out new ways to engage with local and global industry. The ICN2 also trains researchers in nanotechnology, develops numerous activities to facilitate the uptake of nanotechnology by industry, and promotes networking among scientists, engineers, technicians, business people, society, and policy makers.

The ICN2 was accredited by the Spanish Ministry of Economy, Industry and Competitiveness as a Severo Ochoa Centre of Excellence in 2014, the highest level of recognition of scientific excellence and leadership that can be bestowed on a research centre in Spain.

Job Description:

Research areas and groups:

Successful candidates will join one of the ICN2 research groups and carry out their research in one of the following scientific fields:


·         Growth and synthesis of nanomaterials

·         Nanofabrication

·         Characterisation and metrology

·         Theory and simulation


·         Health

·         Energy and environment

·         Information and communication technologies

Summary of conditions:

  • Full-time working contract as a PhD researcher for 3 years. Contracts include medical care coverage by the Spanish public healthcare system and workplace accident insurance.
  • Salary according to the cost of living in Barcelona.
  • Relocation support.

  • Training and monitoring programme: As a member of the institutional PhD Programme, the selected PhD students will have full access to the scientific, technical and transferable skills training and relevant monitoring activities organised each year.

Candidates must fulfil the following requirements at the time of the call deadline:

·         Have obtained a Master or equivalent degree in a field of science related to the ICN2 research activities or group they would like to join by the date of incorporation.

·         Have an excellent academic record and strong commitment to scientific research. Previous research experience is highly regarded.

·         High Level of English.

·         Specific additional eligibility requirements may apply depending on the funding schemes available.
