This postdoctoral position addresses the use of novel concepts and trends, i.e., convergence of PhoNonics (micro-sound) and integrated PhoTonics (nano-optics) in the so-called PhoXonics domain in the frame of telecom, imaging and life science. Acoustics (phononics) and optics (photonics) are driven and ruled by surprisingly comparable phenomena. Acoustic black holes, for example are currently the best test beds for physical black holes study in advanced research institutes. Among the key differences between photonics and phononics, we can note the close to 5 orders of magnitude frequency difference typically required to realize the same wavelength in acoustic domain compared to the optics domain. This allows to use phonon-engineering at "low frequency" to have strong coupling to photons at optical frequencies. In that perspective, phonon-photon coupling in our photonics platforms, implementing novel materials like graphene, is a promising and exciting perspective, for example to develop on-chip optical combs, key elements in emerging spectroscopic techniques and THz imaging systems.
As a designer of novel multi-physics devices and systems, you will collaborate closely with the biomedical, process technology, and characterization teams in your neighborhood. This interaction will enable the natural, but challenging, evolution of the currently developed photonic and phononic technologies and devices towards their application in biomedical. Materials selection, technology parameter definition, modeling of novel physical phenomena as well as technological variability will be key for this successful transition.
Your primary tasks and responsibilities will include:
- Create and implement novel devices for acoustic-optical coupling (acoustically-enhanced light coupling in graphene waveguides, electro-acoustic photonic comb generation, ...) in existing technologies and technologies under development;
- Contribute to the process development and perform the characterization of the designed devices;
- Propose and demonstrate systems using the novel devices;
- Maintain a high standard of literature knowledge to support the design activities;
- Work closely with an interdisciplinary team of engineers and biologists.
This postdoctoral position is funded by imec through KU Leuven. Because of the specific financing statute which targets international mobility for postdocs, only candidates who did not stay or work/study in Belgium for more than 24 months in the past 3 years can be considered for the position (short stays such as holiday, participation in conferences, etc. are not taken into account).
You might be our ideal candidate if you recognize yourself in the following description:
- PhD degree in Physics, Mechanics or Electrical Engineering.
- Good knowledge and interest in multiphysics, acoustics and photonics modeling, design techniques and design environment is an asset.
- Proven experience in conceptual system design and system testing is an asset.
- Ability to quickly write code or routines using Matlab or Python.
- Given the international character of imec, a good knowledge of English is mandatory.
