College of Engineering at Wayne State U establishes nanoengineering undergraduate certificate program

(Nanowerk News) Beginning in winter 2015, Wayne State University’s College of Engineering will offer a nanoengineering undergraduate certificate program that will provide students with in-depth training in the emerging area of nanotechnology. The program will offer new lecture, laboratory and seminar courses that cross traditional departmental and disciplinary boundaries.

“This new program will give our students additional training in cutting-edge technology beyond their traditional degrees to make them more competitive in today's job market,” says Guangzhao Mao, professor of chemical engineering and materials science and director of the Nanoengineering Certificate Program.

The development of the program is part of Wayne State’s ongoing effort, in response to the National Nanotechnology Initiative, to establish a multidisciplinary center of excellence in nanotechnology and nanomedicine, culminating in an award from the National Science Foundation titled “NUE: Development of an Undergraduate Certificate Program in Nanoengineering for Training the Workforce of Tomorrow.”

The certificate program will be administered jointly by Mao and a steering committee consisting of core nanoengineering faculty members from the departments of chemical engineering and materials science and electrical and computer engineering.
