UAlbany NanoCollege marks fifth annual celebration of 'NANOvember' with expanded lineup of initiatives

(Nanowerk News) As a further showcase of Governor Andrew Cuomo’s vision and leadership in making New York State the global epicenter of the nanotechnology industry, the College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering (CNSE) of the University at Albany today announced plans for its fifth annual celebration of NANOvember, an ambitious and unparalleled community outreach initiative that highlights the growing opportunities driven by nanoscale education, innovation, and economic development.

“Guided by Governor Andrew Cuomo, whose innovation-driven economic model and strategic investments are fueling New York’s global leadership in nanotechnology, the UAlbany NanoCollege is delighted to share the excitement of this revolutionary field with New Yorkers,” said Dr. Alain E. Kaloyeros, Senior Vice President and Chief Executive Officer of CNSE. “The events and activities throughout the month will give people of all ages a greater understanding of the science that’s inspiring groundbreaking possibilities in every industry, while also demonstrating the worldwide recognition of CNSE and New York State.”

Several new activities are planned for NANOvember, including a Nano Job Fair on Wednesday, November 7 that will recruit candidates to help fill more than 300 current and future openings at CNSE; a Nano Discovery Program on Saturday, November 10, which builds on CNSE’s partnership with Trinity Alliance of the Capital Region to support nanotechnology education and workforce training for communities typically underrepresented in science and engineering; a Cleantech Entrepreneur Roundtable hosted by CNSE’s Energy and Environmental Technology Applications Center (E2TAC) on Friday, November 16; and “The Smart Phone Revolution & 2012 NanoText Competition” on Saturday, November 17, which will trace the evolution of smartphones, present the Capital Region’s first-ever speed-texting competition, and collect used cell phones for Equinox’s Domestic Violence Program.

CNSE will host its popular Community Day Open House on Saturday, November 3, with more than 1,500 people expected to take part in various hands-on activities, engaging demonstrations, timely presentations, and guided tours of CNSE’s unrivalled Albany NanoTech Complex. |

Additionally, the CNSE Community Lecture Series returns on consecutive Monday nights beginning November 5, with presentations by Dr. Andres Melendez, CNSE Professor and Associate Head of the Nanobioscience Constellation, who will discuss the impact of nanotechnology on the aging process; Michael Fancher, CNSE Vice President for Business Development and Economic Outreach, who will look at how nanotechnology is transforming military technologies; Paul Farrar Jr., General Manager of the Global 450 Consortium (G450C), headquartered at CNSE, and CNSE Vice President for Manufacturing Innovation, who will outline the progress and impact of the G450C initiative and its significant benefits to New York and the nanoelectronics industry; and Dr. Alain Kaloyeros, CNSE Senior Vice President and CEO, who will discuss the emergence of nanotechnology, its growing impact on society, and the global leadership of CNSE and New York State in the science that is “leading to the next Industrial Revolution.”
